Sufardi obtained his law degree at the University of Malaya and subsequently was awarded a Diploma in International Air Law at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. He was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1986.

His career includes serving the Attorney-General's Chambers for a period of 6 years as Federal Counsel which involved being attached to various Government departments. During this period, he also became Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Transport and often represented the government at international transport conventions. After leaving government service Sufardi joined Perbadanan Nasional Shipping Line Bhd. when it was incorporated in 1982 and served for 14 years heading up Corporate Affairs encompassing legal, insurance, claims and administration.

He is also a past Deputy President of the Malaysian Shipowners Association and Director of the Newcastle Protection and Indemnity Association.
